Anaheim is an unusual driving environment, and the reason is that two completely different traffic systems overlap here. The Disneyland Resort employs around 36,000 people at a single site and the city drew a record 26.5 million visitors in 2025, which puts an enormous, permanent volume of unfamiliar drivers on Harbor Boulevard, Katella Avenue, Ball Road and Disney Way. Layered directly on top of that are Interstate 5 running the length of the city, SR-91 across the north, and SR-57 down the eastern side — all three carrying heavy freight.

For glass, the freight matters more than the tourists. SR-91 is the primary corridor between Orange County and the Inland Empire and it is dense with trucks; SR-57 is a commuter artery north toward the San Gabriel Valley where following distances are chronically short. Short following distance behind a loaded trailer is the textbook chip scenario, and it is why the 5 and the 91 produce most of the damage we see here.

There is also a specific and less obvious source: refuse haulers. Commercial trucks bound for the Olinda Alpha landfill are directed off SR-57 at Imperial Highway, which puts a steady stream of loaded and empty transfer trailers through the north-east of the city all working day.

Two Anaheims, two different appointments

Flatland Anaheim — west and central, plus the resort area and the Platinum Triangle near the stadium and the Honda Center — is dense, with a lot of apartments, older tract housing, shared surface lots and street parking. Access is normally fine; the constraint is finding a bay where the vehicle can sit undisturbed while the urethane cures.

Anaheim Hills, east of SR-57 up toward Santa Ana Canyon, is the easiest work in the city — private driveways, level ground, room to set a calibration target. But the roads getting up there are the ones that break glass. Canyon and foothill routes carry rock and grit washed down onto the carriageway, so Anaheim Hills vehicles come to us with edge chips noticeably more often than the city average, and edge damage is the kind that keeps spreading.

Heads-up on two multi-year work zones

Caltrans began work on the SR-57 northbound widening between Orangewood and Katella in early 2026, running to about mid-2028, and a larger SR-91 project between SR-57 and SR-55 — covering Anaheim, Fullerton, Orange and Placentia — starts in summer 2026 and runs into 2030. Active work zones mean milled pavement, temporary lane shifts, steel plates and loose aggregate. If your commute uses either stretch, assume more chips over the next few years rather than fewer, and deal with them while they are still repairable.
